Every year, in July and August, the International Scarecrow Festival takes place in Frontino, an event that, since 2014, has won the affection of adults and even more so of children, who along the little streets of the ancient village come across figures dressed in the most unusual and amusing styles.
A kind of street art that ties past and present together, with these effigies that were once essential in the cultivated fields, and are today “extras” bringing life to an urban setting.
The baldacc born to scare the birds
Scattered throughout Frontino, part monster, part clown, funny and colorful, with that magical touch that blends the real world with the fantastic, the scarecrows, called baldacc in the local dialect, were once made to frighten away birds.
Today, they stand as welcoming sentinels, offering smiles to tourists and visitors, who are invited to vote for their favorites: the most voted scarecrows are awarded on the first Sunday of September, at the end of the dialect show Gira la Piazza, held in the local Titano Theater.
It brings together life and theater, young and old, long-time Frontino residents and new generations of immigrants, in a beautiful encounter of ages and cultures.
